The Analects opens with Book 1 "Xue Er" (Study), 16 chapters on the fundamentals: learning, filial piety, loyalty, and sincerity.
"Is it not a pleasure to learn and practice at the right time? Is it not a joy to have friends coming from afar? Is he not a gentleman who feels no resentment when unrecognized?"
"Those who are filial and fraternal yet are fond of offending their superiors — such are rare." Filial piety and brotherly respect are the root of ren (humanity).
"Clever talk and flattering appearance — such are rarely ren." Be genuine.
