Tao Te Ching Ch.11: The Use of Nothing

Tao Te Ching Chapter 11: "Thirty spokes share one hub; it is the empty space that makes the wheel useful. Clay is shaped into vessels; it is the emptiness that makes the vessel useful. Doors and windows are cut out; it is the empty space that makes the room useful."

Three Metaphors

Wheel: 30 spokes meet at the hub — the empty center lets it turn. Vessel: clay is shaped — the empty interior holds things. Room: doors and windows are cut — the empty space is where you live.

Being and Non-Being

"Being (you) provides advantage; non-being (wu) provides usefulness." Tangible things offer convenience, but it's the intangible emptiness that actually functions.

The Lesson

Don't only value "useful" things. White space, rest, silence — seemingly useless, actually essential. Leave room in life, and creativity arises.
