Di Zi Gui: Standards for Conduct

Di Zi Gui (Rules for Students) by Li Yuxiu (Qing Dynasty) expands on the Analects line: "At home be filial; out be brotherly; be careful and trustworthy; love all; be close to the virtuous; and with remaining energy study culture."

At Home: Filial Piety

Respond to parents immediately. Don't be lazy when told. Admonish errors gently. Taste medicine for sick parents.

Outside: Brotherly Respect

Don't address elders by name. Bow when you meet them on the road.

Careful and Trustworthy

Rise early, sleep late. Dress properly. Don't make promises lightly. Speak truthfully.
