BaZi Love & Marriage Compatibility — Read a Couple’s Chart

How two BaZi charts interact: Day Master attraction, branch clashes and combinations, and what the spouse palace (Day branch) reveals about a relationship.

BaZi Love & Marriage Compatibility: Reading Two Charts Together

Most people come to BaZi compatibility hoping for a verdict: yes or no, soulmate or disaster. Classical BaZi does not work that way. A chart does not describe a person in isolation, and it certainly does not describe a relationship in isolation. What it describes is weather — the elemental climate two people bring into the same room, and how those climates interact when they meet.

Reading a couple's chart means reading three things at once: the two Day Masters, the way the branches combine or collide, and the spouse palace in each chart. Get those three layers right and you will understand a relationship far better than any simple "compatibility score" could tell you.

Start With the Day Master: Two Elements in Conversation

In any BaZi chart, the Day Master — the Heavenly Stem of the day pillar — is the person. It is the reference point from which every other element is judged. When you place two charts side by side, the first question is simple: what element is each person, and what does each element do to the other?

This is not about "good" or "bad" elements. It is about relationship dynamics. A Wood Day Master and a Fire Day Master have a producing relationship: Wood feeds Fire, so the Wood person tends to support, encourage, and sometimes exhaust themselves for the Fire person. Reverse it — Fire Day Master with Wood partner — and the Fire person receives nourishment and warmth. Both can work beautifully, but the giving is not symmetrical, and couples who understand this stop keeping score.

Controlling relationships (Water controls Fire, Fire controls Metal, and so on) are not automatically doomed. A gentle control is structure; a harsh control is pressure. The difference lies in strength. If you have not yet learned to identify your own Day Master and its element, start with our guide on how to read a BaZi chart before comparing two charts — you cannot interpret a couple until you can interpret one person.

Combinations (合) and Clashes (冲) Between Branches

If Day Masters are the conversation, the Earthly Branches are the furniture in the room — where people sit, and whether they keep bumping into each other. The twelve branches form two important patterns when two charts meet:

Six Combinations (六合): certain branch pairs — Zi–Chou, Yin–Hai, Mao–Xu, Chen–You, Si–Shen, Wu–Wei — bind together. When your day branch combines with your partner's day branch, there is a natural pull, an ease of proximity. Classical texts describe it as two doors opening toward each other.

Six Clashes (六冲): Zi–Wu, Chou–Wei, Yin–Shen, Mao–You, Chen–Xu, Si–Hai. These pairs face each other directly. A clash between day branches often shows up as friction over pace, habits, or emotional timing — one person advances while the other retreats. It does not mean the relationship fails. Many long marriages contain a day-branch clash; the couple simply learned to negotiate the tension instead of pretending it isn't there.

There is also the Three Harmony (三合) framework, which groups branches into elemental teams. If you want the full reference tables, our article on Earthly Branches lays out every combination and clash with examples. One caution: a clash in the year or month branches is usually milder than a clash in the day branch, because the day pillar is where intimacy lives.

The Spouse Palace: The Day Branch

In BaZi, the day pillar has two halves. The Heavenly Stem is you — the Day Master. The Earthly Branch beneath it is the spouse palace, the seat where a partner sits in your chart. This single branch carries more weight in marriage questions than almost anything else.

Read it in three steps. First, what element is hidden inside the branch? The hidden stems tell you what kind of partner you tend to attract and what you quietly expect from them. Second, how does that branch relate to your Day Master — does it support you, drain you, or challenge you? Third, is the spouse palace stable or exposed? If the day branch is clashed by another branch in your own chart, relationship themes may arrive with more turbulence; if it is combined, bonds tend to form more readily.

The Ten Gods add nuance here. A spouse palace holding the Officer star (for a woman's chart) or the Wealth star (for a man's chart) is classically considered a supportive marriage indicator. But the Gods must be read in context — a useful God in the spouse palace is a gift; a hostile one is a lesson. Our Ten Gods guide explains how to identify which is which in your own chart.

Strong, Weak, and the Balance Between Two People

A chart is never read without assessing strength. A Day Master is strong when it has abundant support from season, roots, and allies; weak when it is surrounded by draining or controlling forces. This matters enormously in compatibility, because strength determines what each person needs from a partner.

A strong Day Master usually benefits from output, wealth, or control — something to push against and shape. A weak Day Master usually benefits from support and resource — someone who reinforces rather than drains. When one partner's useful element is exactly what the other partner's chart supplies in abundance, the relationship has a natural engine. When both partners are strong in the same element and neither supplies what the other needs, affection may be real but the relationship can feel like two people rowing in the same direction with no rudder.

Season matters too. A Fire Day Master born in winter is a different creature from one born in summer, and their needs in a partner differ accordingly. This is why two people with identical Day Master elements can have completely opposite compatibility experiences.

What BaZi Compatibility Can and Cannot Tell You

Honesty matters more than romance here. BaZi can describe tendencies: where ease is likely, where friction is likely, what each person unconsciously seeks. It cannot predict whether two people will choose kindness, communicate honestly, or do the work. A chart with a day-branch combination and mutual support is a favorable wind — not a guarantee of smooth sailing.

Use compatibility reading as a map, not a verdict. The most useful question is never "are we compatible?" but "given these two charts, where should we be patient with each other?" That question, BaZi can answer well.

Frequently Asked Questions

My partner and I have a day-branch clash. Does that mean we shouldn't be together?

No. A clash indicates friction and differing rhythms, not impossibility. Many stable marriages carry a day-branch clash. What matters is whether the rest of the charts offer support and whether both people are willing to negotiate the tension rather than fight it.

Is a combination between our Day Masters enough for good compatibility?

It is a favorable sign, but it is only one layer. You still need to weigh branch relationships, spouse palace condition, and the strength of each Day Master. A single combination cannot carry a chart reading on its own.

Can BaZi tell me exactly when I will meet my spouse?

No, and any service that promises this is overreaching. BaZi can describe the quality and timing tendencies of relationship periods through luck cycles, but it cannot name a date or a person. Treat timing analysis as probability, not prophecy.
