How to Read a BaZi Chart

First: a real chart to work with

We will read one example all the way through so every step lands. Say someone was born on 15 May 1990 at 14:30. Their eight characters are the four pillar-pairs below — the output of the same lunar calendar math our calculator uses.

Each stem-branch pair is one pillar. The Day Pillar's stem is always the special one — it represents you.

Step 1 — Know the four pillars and what they mean

• Year Pillar — grandparents, ancestry, early childhood, and your outer world.
• Month Pillar — parents, career, and the season you were born into. The month branch is the strongest influence on your inner strength.
• Day Pillar — you (stem = your core, branch = your spouse/home/intimate side).
• Hour Pillar — children, late life, and your private wishes.

Step 2 — Find your Day Master

In the example, the Day Pillar is 庚辰: the stem 庚 (Gēng) is the Day Master. Every other character is read in relation to it. If the day stem were 甲 instead, the whole story changes — even if year, month and hour were identical.

Step 3 — Translate stems and branches into elements

Each of the ten stems and twelve branches carries a five-element and a yin/yang tone. Quick reference — stems: 甲乙 Wood · 丙丁 Fire · 戊己 Earth · 庚辛 Metal · 壬癸 Water. Branches map by animal, e.g. 午 Horse = Fire, 子 Rat = Water.

Our example chart is dominated by Metal and Fire: stems 庚庚 (Yang Metal ×2) and 辛 (Yin Metal) against the Fire of 午 and 巳, with Earth (辰) and Water (子) in support.

Step 4 — Count the five elements, including hidden ones

Classical reading does not stop at the eight visible characters. Each branch also hides one or more stems inside it (藏干) — for example 辰 Dragon secretly holds Earth, Wood and Water. BaZi counts each hidden stem at half weight. The tally for our example: Metal 3.5 · Fire 3 · Earth 2 · Water 1.5 · Wood 0.5.

Step 5 — How strong is the Day Master?

BaZi groups the five elements into two camps relative to your Day Master:

• Allies — your own element plus the one that feeds it (its "mother"). For Metal that is Metal + Earth.
• Rivals — the elements that drain or clash with it: what controls you, what you control, and what you generate.

If allies outweigh rivals, the chart is strong; otherwise it is weak. Season matters too: if your month branch feeds you (Metal born in an Earth month, say) you are "in command". Our Metal example scores allies 5.5 vs rivals 5 — just barely strong, born in a Fire month that taxes Metal, so the strength is conditional.

Step 6 — Find your favorable elements (喜用神)

Tradition's practical ask: what does this chart need more of to feel balanced?

• A strong Day Master needs draining — what it controls, controls it, or generates. Pick the scarcest.
• A weak Day Master needs support — its own element or its mother. Again, pick the scarcest.

Our example is strong, so it needs the scarcer drainers: Wood (which Metal chops) and Water (which Metal... dissolves into). Those become the favorable elements — the "lucky colors, directions and careers" a reading recommends.

Step 7 — Read the branches as the stage

The Day Master is the actor; the four branches are the sets. The Year branch sets the era, the Month branch the current act, the Day branch the relationship, the Hour branch the epilogue. How the Day Master gets along with each branch's element — supported, drained, clashing or combining — is where a reader finds "turning points" in a life story.

Step 8 — Know what BaZi can and cannot do

BaZi is a personality-and-timing framework, not a casino. It is excellent for self-reflection, choosing colors and directions, understanding relationship dynamics, and picking seasons for change. It does not replace medicine, law or common sense — and any reader who promises certainty is over-selling.
