The Five Elements (Wu Xing) explained
Wu Xing — literally "five phases" or "five elements" — is the ancient Chinese model of how energy (Qi) flows. Unlike the four elements of the West, the Chinese five are a cycle: each one feeds the next and checks the one after, so nothing stands still.
The generating cycle (相生) and controlling cycle (相克)
Wood feeds Fire, Fire creates Earth, Earth bears Metal, Metal gathers into Water, Water nourishes Wood. In the same breath: Wood parts Earth, Earth dams Water, Water quenches Fire, Fire melts Metal, Metal chops Wood. A healthy chart is one where these two cycles stay roughly in balance — too much of one element, or a missing one, is read as a theme of your character and circumstances.
| Element | Symbol & sign | Season | Nature | Profiles |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wood 木 | spring, east, liver & eyes | Spring | growth, plans, kindness | Wood people grow upward like trees — idealistic, patient, community-minded. |
| Fire 火 | summer, south, heart & tongue | Summer | radiance, passion, ceremony | Fire people warm a room — expressive, magnetic, quick but at times impulsive. |
| Earth 土 | change of seasons, centre, spleen & mouth | Late each season | grounding, trust, harvest | Earth people are the reliable centre — practical, honest, steady. |
| Metal 金 | autumn, west, lungs & nose | Autumn | precision, justice, grief | Metal people value order and quality — disciplined, decisive, loyal. |
| Water 水 | winter, north, kidneys & ears | Winter | wisdom, depth, fear | Water people adapt and flow — intuitive, strategic, philosophical. |
How your personal element is decided
Different traditions name your "element" differently. Popular zodiac articles use the year's element; but in classical BaZi, the strongest self-reference is the Day Master — the Heavenly Stem of your day pillar. Our calculator uses the Day Master, then weighs all eight characters to judge whether your chart overflows or under-supplies that element.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which element am I — and what if I disagree?
By the Day-Master method, "your element" is the element of the day you were born on, e.g. a 庚 (Geng) day is Metal. Many people feel the label fits their character closely; if you were born near a month boundary the chart can tip either way.
What does it mean if an element is missing from my chart?
It simply means that phase appears very little in your eight characters. Traditional readings say you may lack some of its qualities and benefit from adding its colors, directions, seasons and habits to your environment.
What is my lucky color or number?
The balancing elements our calculator recommends carry traditional colors (green/blue for Wood, red/purple for Fire, yellow/brown for Earth, white/gold for Metal, black/navy for Water) and numbers (Wood 3 & 8, Fire 2 & 7, Earth 5 & 10, Metal 4 & 9, Water 1 & 6).
Is Wu Xing related to Feng Shui?
Yes — Feng Shui uses the same five phases to read and adjust spaces. Knowing your personal element can guide both: which side of a room to favour, which materials and colors feel grounding.
