Why elements have relationships at all
Wu Xing is not a list of five substances — it is a description of how energy moves. Two cycles do all the work. In the generating cycle (相生) each phase feeds the next; in the controlling cycle (相克) each phase restrains another. Every possible pairing of two elements falls into one of these two patterns, which is why compatibility can be mapped at all.

A generating pairing feels easy and is easy to overdo — too much nurturing becomes dependence. A controlling pairing feels like friction and is easy to resent — but it is also where most real growth happens. Neither is "better". A chart wants balance, not comfort.

Read it as: rows act on columns. Find your element down the left, your partner's across the top, and the cell tells you what your element does to theirs. Both directions matter — if you generate them and they check you, that is a different relationship from the reverse.

The four relationships, described
1. They generate you — the nourishing pairing 生我
This is the pairing people mean when they say a match "feels right". The other person's element feeds yours, so being around them restores you: you leave conversations with more energy than you arrived with. Wood is fed by Water; Fire by Wood; Earth by Fire; Metal by Earth; Water by Metal.
It is genuinely the most comfortable dynamic — and the one to watch for imbalance. If you are the one being fed all the time without giving back, the relationship quietly becomes about your needs.
2. You generate them — the giving pairing 我生
The reverse: you are the source. This dynamic produces the classic carer-and-creative pair — one provides the conditions, the other flourishes. It is warm, productive and frequently the shape of strong working partnerships where one person supplies and the other executes.
The risk is depletion. The giving element spends itself, and a long-term mismatch of this kind is often described afterwards as "I poured everything in".
3. Same element — the mirror pairing 比和
Two Woods, two Fires, two Metals. You share a tempo, an instinct for the same things and usually a sense of humour. Nothing has to be explained. These pairings are fast friends and often fast partners.
The caution is that they double down on the same weakness. Two Metals can both be cold and critical; two Fires can both run hot and burn out. A mirror pairing benefits enormously from one person in the pair having a different element elsewhere in their chart.
4. One checks the other — the controlling pairing 相克
The most misunderstood relation in the system. One element restrains another: Wood parts Earth, Earth dams Water, Water quenches Fire, Fire melts Metal, Metal chops Wood. Read outside Chinese metaphysics this sounds like an incompatibility, and in its worst form it is — a controlling pairing that nobody names becomes criticism, control or quiet resentment.
But understood, this is the pairing with the most productive energy in it. The checking element sets the standard; the checked element supplies the raw material. Every strong editor-writer, producer-director and coach-athlete partnership has this shape. The whole question is whether both people know it is happening.

Reading compatibility properly
There is one correction that separates real BaZi from a compatibility quiz: the element alone is not enough. Three things change the reading:
- Strength. A "weak" Wood does not dominate a "strong" Metal the way the chart implies — in fact the relationship flips. Whether your Day Master is strong or weak relative to the rest of your chart is read first, before any pairing is judged.
- The favorable element. What you need is not always what you are. Someone whose chart is short of Water benefits from Water far more than from their own Wood — and this is often why two people "shouldn't" match and do.
- The whole chart. Four pillars — year, month, day and hour — contribute eight characters between them. Two people with clashing Day Masters can have three other pillars in complete agreement.

Five element compatibility — common questions
Are wood and metal compatible?
Metal chops Wood in the controlling cycle, so the tradition reads this as a checking pairing rather than an easy one. In practice the Metal partner tends to correct, set standards for, or cut back the Wood partner. Handled with goodwill it produces exceptional work; handled without it, it is experienced as constant criticism.
Which element am I most compatible with?
As a rough guide, you are nourished by the element that generates yours (Wood is nourished by Water, Fire by Wood, and so on) and you nourish the element yours generates. But classical astrology judges a match on the full chart — including whether your element is strong or weak — not on the element alone.
What if we have the same element?
Same-element pairs understand each other instantly — shared tempo, shared instincts, little to explain. The risk is that they also share the same blind spots and amplify each other's weaknesses instead of balancing them.
Does a controlling pairing mean we should not be together?
No. The system reads balance, not fate. Controlling pairings often produce the strongest long partnerships precisely because each person sharpens the other — provided both are aware of the pattern rather than quietly resenting it.
Is this the same as Chinese zodiac compatibility?
They are related but not the same. Zodiac compatibility compares year branches — the animal signs, which come from just one of your eight characters. Element compatibility compares the Day Master and the five phases across the whole chart, which is far more specific. If the two disagree, the element reading is the more personal one.
