Dragon 龙 — Ambitious

The Dragon is the 辰 branch of the twelve Earthly Branches, covering the hours 07:00–09:00. Below: every Dragon year, what the sign means as a personality, how each birth year's element changes it, and who the Dragon matches best.

Your animal is only one of eight characters. The zodiac sign comes from your birth year alone — the shallowest layer of a BaZi chart. Your real reading comes from the Day Master and the full five-element balance. Compare the two below.

Years of the Dragon

If you were born in one of these years — on or after that year's Chinese New Year — the Dragon is your sign. Births in January or early February fall before the new year and belong to the previous animal.

Recent Dragon years and their element

The animal repeats every 12 years, but the element does not. Each year pairs the animal with one of the ten Heavenly Stems, which is why 2026 is a "Fire Horse" and 1966 — sixty years earlier — is also a Fire Horse, while the Horses in between are Wood, Water, Metal and Earth.

Dragon personality

The Dragon is the only mythical animal in the zodiac, and the only one that arrives with its own weather. Dragons are the sign most likely to be described as "larger than life", and they usually are — in drive, in presence, in appetite.

Dragons want significance. Not merely success — significance. They are generous, funny, self-confident and exhausting, with a temper that arrives like a summer storm and passes just as fast. They are also the sign most likely to burn a bridge out of pride, and the most genuinely creative workers in the zodiac.

Strengths

Watch-outs

Dragon in love and work

In love: Dragons love generously and demand a lot. They need admiration and they need space, and they will test the patience of anyone who tries to contain them. The right partner is a secure one who can match their energy or step aside gracefully.

At work: Founders, creative directors, film and media, architecture, law, anything with a podium. A Dragon wants scope; give them a small task and they will find a way to make it large.

Dragon compatibility

Classical Chinese astrology reads zodiac relationships through three relationships: the trine (三合, a natural alliance of three animals), the six-harmony (六合, the single best partner) and the clash (冲, the sign directly opposite).

Best matches: Rat · Monkey · Rooster — the trine allies and the six-harmony partner. These pairings are read as mutual support: shared tempo, easy trust, and few fights about how things should be done.

Most demanding: Dog — the opposite branch, the classic clash. This is not a prohibition; the tradition reads it as a pairing of friction rather than a pairing of ease, which can sharpen both people or exhaust them.

Compatibility is a layer of flavour, not a verdict. Two people in a "clashing" pair with good charts and kind habits do far better than a "perfect" pair without them.

The Dragon in 2026 and 2027

2026, the Fire Horse (丙午): The Fire Horse is not a Dragon ally by trine or harmony, but the Horse is a natural running mate for the Dragon’s ambition — a high-energy, high-visibility year. The warning is Fire on top of Fire: overreach, overspend, and promises made in the heat of it.

2027, the Fire Goat (丁未): The Fire Goat is slower and softer. Expect a natural year to consolidate, restore relationships, and finish the things 2026 started.

Dragon — common questions

Why is the Dragon so popular?

It is the one animal nobody has seen. It is read as the emblem of the emperor, of good fortune, and of weather-sized ambition — which makes it the most-claimed sign in the whole cycle.

What is the Dragon’s worst match?

The Dog. They sit in opposition, held to be a clash of honesty against pride — the Dog says the plain thing the Dragon does not want to hear.
